(Crouse Description)
This course is taught in English. Perfect English proficiency is not necessarily required for this class, but the brave and prepared spirit that is willing to take the challenge of discussing in English is mandatory. The course is aimed to build up the fundamental concepts of biochemistry and integrate these concepts. Fun topics from our daily life, including food, health, medicine, biotechnology that are related to biochemistry will be chosen for discussion. Through the topics, we hope to inspire students and made them engaged in learning. Except handouts, multimedia (animation, computer modeling and videos) and pre-lecture exercise will be posted online before each class. IRS (immediate response system) and group discussion will be implemented in classroom. Upon completion, students should have a mental model of the basic components found in organisms, such as food we eat, as well as how these components function in our body. In addition, students will learn relevant English medical terminology and feel more comfortable using English in scientific discussion and presentation.

(Crouse Objectives)
This is an introductory course to provide the fundamental understandings of life. The intention of the course is for students to (1) know the composition, structure and function correlation of the major classes of biological molecules. (2) understand the principles of metabolic pathways including: enzyme function, chemical conversion and bioenergetics of biomolecules, integration and regulation, and recognize how improper regulation of these biochemical processes can lead to human disease. (3) understand the molecular processes and regulation in expressing genetic information. (4) allow students to further understand and analyze biochemical aspects of relevant diseases, medicine, and biotechnology. (5) know relevant English medical terminology and improve the English proficiency in scientific discussion/ presentation
